The Illustration Conversation

Before the discussion had started, Lorna created a piece of artwork that embodies her favourite kind of illustrative practice, the processes involved and how she identifies with the technique. ‘Digital Self’ visually describes Lorna’s notion of what it feels like to paint 3D models in virtual space – suspended in an infinite abyss, the act of being virtually present in the space but physically present in the real world, there is a duality of sense of self.

The senses feather in and out of the virtual reality as Lorna’s level of immersion changes over time, depending on the rhythm of being in a flow state whilst working. This is represented by the morphing, continually receding and emerging lines that form a self portrait (image: right, video: below). The process evokes a mindful response, as there is a byproduct of a heightened self awareness throughout the experience.
